DPSF Wrapped: The Top 5 Tracks on Our 2024 Playlist

Erika Wilkins

Executive Director, DPS Foundation

As we close out the year, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible milestones we’ve achieved together in 2024.

This year hasn’t been without its challenges. Our local public school community has faced obstacles that continue to strain staff, students, and families. But as always, Durham rises to meet the moment. Together, we’ve found innovative ways to push forward, and your support has made it all possible.

If this year’s accomplishments were a Spotify playlist, five tracks would top the charts. These “Top 5 Hits” showcase the impact we’ve made together and what your continued support can achieve:

1. "Lean on Me" – Bill Withers

Over $1.7 million in school-level grants supported students and teachers this year, addressing critical needs, and opening new opportunities for success.

2. "What a Wonderful World" – Louis Armstrong

Your advocacy helped secure universal free breakfast and lunch for all DPS students, leading to a significant rise in meal participation and ensuring students are ready to learn.

3. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" – Simon & Garfunkel

The expansion of the WHOLE Schools initiative strengthened support for mental health and wellness in DPS, connecting students and staff with vital resources and reducing stigma.

4. "Rise Up" – Andra Day

Through initiatives like the Teacher Leadership Academy and partnerships with Crayons2Calculators, we’ve strengthened support for educators to recruit, retain, and inspire.

5. "Come Together" – The Beatles

New partnerships with the Durham Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, and Acceler8 have created stronger networks and more opportunities for students and educators alike.

But here’s the thing about a great playlist — it's got something for everyone. Every day, our staff at DPSF strives to make quality education accessible for every student. But, in order for us to deliver on that commitment, we need the power of you, our community — now more than ever.

Let’s Keep the Music Going

As we prepare for 2025, we’re asking for your help to amplify our ongoing efforts. Whether it’s through a year-end donation, sharing our work with your network, or volunteering your time, every action builds toward a brighter future for our students and educators.

Let’s make next year’s playlist even stronger. Together, we can create a Durham where every child, every educator, and every school thrives.
