161 Register for Durham’s First Youth Equity Summit
DPS Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council, together with partners Ignite Academy and DPS Office of Equity Affairs, hosted the first Durham Youth Equity Summit on Wednesday, October 7th for students 13+.
More than 160 students registered to attend sessions such as: Anti-Racism training with 'we are' and Made-in-Durham Youth; Election 2020: Youth Organizing Youth & Communities; Building an LGBTQ+ Club and Queer Inclusive Classroom; Ending the School to Prison Pipeline: Demands from the Youth Justice Project.
Here are a few highlights from the sessions:
Youth in attendance represented 20 out of 23 DPS Secondary Schools and 70 percent of students who attended were students of color.
100 percent of participant survey respondents said they agree or strongly agree that the YES Summit should happen again next year. 91 percent indicated that they want to stay involved in equity causes and committed to future actions. 37 percent indicated they wanted to immediately participate in voter outreach.
