Eunice O’Neal Sanders, a Durham native, who was raised in the West End area with five siblings and parents, Reuben and Nekoda O’Neal.

She attended the former Durham City Schools graduating from Durham High School and went on to pursue higher education, by attending North Carolina Central University to earn a B.A. in Sociology, then continued on to complete the M.A. in Special Education, and as well as the M.Ed in School Administration.

Dr. Sanders later went on to also earn a Ed.D in school administration from North Carolina State University.

Along this career journey, she married Carlton L. Sanders who retired from IT at Duke Hospital. Being of service to their community is a passion they both share. They have two daughters and one granddaughter who also volunteer in the community.

Dr. Sanders retired from Durham Public Schools as an Assistant Superintendent after serving for over 30 years in many roles: teacher, assistant principal, and principal, at both the elementary and secondary levels, as well as an executive director in Central Services.

The word “retirement” is used loosely as she continues to be a Leadership Coach with principals in Durham Public Schools and the Program Manager of Crayons2Calculators, a local nonprofit that directly equips DPS teachers with the classroom supplies they need- at no cost- to help reduce barriers to success for every DPS student.

A lifelong avid reader and a movie buff who loves to cook, Eunice enjoys being very active in her church and scheduling outings with family and friends.
